Comic Art

I have been a fan of comic book art ever since I was a little kid reading my superhero comics. Of course back then, I did not think about the comic art as something in and of itself. The comic book was something that I experienced very deeply ? as kids often do. If I saw a particularly striking image in the comic book, it would often start to launch me into a reverie. I would begin to daydream about the places and people in that image. I would be flying through the air with super man or exploring an ancient city with some great archaeologist. What I appreciated back then about comic art is the same thing that I appreciate now: the ability of comics to transport you to another place.

Since then, the comic arts have grown vaster, more varied, and more refined. Artists like Dave McKean have really taken comic book art to a level that no one had dreamed of even 15 years ago. Some of the stuff that the best artists make could find a place in any museum in the world. It really is amazing to look at, and adds a lot to the experience of comic book readers of all ages.

I have gotten so engrossed in comic art lately that I have begun to collect some to put on my walls. For a comic book reader, I have never been all that much of a collector, but some of these images really speak to me. The people who print up comics posters really know what they are doing. They are able to select the most memorable moments in some of the best comics ever made, and display them with a quality that appeals to lifelong comic book fans like me. The effect can be downright stunning.

Of course, my favorite place to enjoy comic art is still inside a comic book. On its own it is good art, but as part of a story it is something more ? a moment of high drama that you can live over and over again every time you read the comic book. When I open up a new comic, I still get the same feeling of excitement and anticipation I used to get as a kid. The evil posturing of the villains, the noble poses of the heroes, and all the rest of it still speaks to me as clearly as ever.
